A2P 10DLC Guide

Toll-Free vs 10DLC: Which Number Type to Use

Both let businesses text customers, but they use separate approval processes. Here is how they compare and which to choose.

Key Differences

How They Compare

10DLC uses standard local numbers and needs brand and campaign registration with The Campaign Registry. Toll-free numbers, which start with 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833, need toll-free verification instead. The two processes are separate, so approval for one does not carry over to the other. Skipping either one gets your texts blocked.

Side by Side

Toll-Free vs 10DLC: Key Differences

Toll-free and 10DLC numbers both send business texts in the US, but different processes approve them. 10DLC uses brand and campaign registration with The Campaign Registry and charges monthly campaign fees. Toll-free uses a separate toll-free verification and has no monthly campaign fee. Both block unapproved traffic: error 30034 for 10DLC and 30032 for toll-free.

What About Short Codes?

Short codes are 5 or 6 digit numbers built for high volume and one-time passcodes. They have their own approval process and cost far more. On Twilio a random short code is $1,000 and a vanity short code $1,500, billed quarterly, plus setup. For most small and mid-sized businesses, 10DLC or toll-free is the practical choice.

Choose

Should You Use Toll-Free or 10DLC?

Use 10DLC if you text from a local number, through a CRM or phone system, in two-way conversations, or run several campaigns under one EIN. Use toll-free if you want one national number, send support or notification texts, and prefer to skip monthly campaign fees. Both need approval before sending, so plan the registration either way.

  • Choose 10DLC for local presence, CRMs such as GoHighLevel, and multiple use cases.
  • Choose toll-free for a national brand, a support line, or one main use case.
  • Use both only if you have a clear reason, and register or verify each separately.

We handle either: A2P 10DLC registration or toll-free verification, $50 flat.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Toll-free has no monthly campaign fee, while 10DLC campaigns cost $1.50 to $10 a month by use case. Per-message carrier surcharges apply to both, so the real difference depends on your volume and use case.

No. Toll-free numbers need their own toll-free verification. A 10DLC brand and campaign only covers local 10-digit numbers.

Not to US or Canadian mobiles. Since January 31, 2024, traffic from unverified toll-free numbers in Restricted or Pending status is blocked with error 30032.

10DLC is the usual default for CRMs because it gives local numbers and two-way conversations. Toll-free can work too, but it needs its own verification.
